Franz Ferdinand – Franz Ferdinand

It’s sobering to think that this time last year FF had released one single and were out on the road supporting fellow Glaswegians Belle And Sebastian. Now everyone owns a copy of this record and the follow up due for the end of the year will be a possible for Christmas number 1, 2005.

The Killers - Hot Fuss

The Killers are too cool for words. Certainly too cool for their home town of Vegas. I can't wait to see them again when they play the NME shows in February.

!!! – Louden Up Now

The grooviest record on this list and one of the most underrated albums of 2004.


Kasabian – Kasabian

Dispite being released on DRM clobbered CD (thanks boys), this album spent ages on my minidisc player. And the album is only half the story because the songs on Kasabian come alive when taken out on the road.

The Zutons – Who Killed The Zutons

Everyone loves the Zutons don't they? If you haven't seen the Zutons live then this record is a great introduction to the band. If you've seen them on the road then this record is a pale facsimile of the Zutons. In short this album is only half as good as The Zutons can be - this year's follow up should fix this.

The best singles

Babyshambles – Killamangiro, because it showed us all that Pete could do it all without Carl.

The Five O Clock Heroes – Head Games, for sounding like The Clash AND The Jam

The Rakes – 22 Grand Job, because it so insanely catchy that it spent 2 weeks going around and around in my head. in fact, just writing this I've stated to sing it again!

Bloc Party – Little Thoughts, becuase Bloc Party gave me FOUR singles to consider for this list, all of them ace and this was the best of the lot.

Art Brut - Modern Art, for the B-Side, My Little Brother and it's closing refrain of "Stay Off The Smack".

Looking forward to 2005

So what does 2005 hold in store? Well its going to be even better than last year. In the next few months we'll be hearing new albums by Bonnie Prince Billy, New Order, Doves, Bloc Party (Yes, Yes, YES!) , The Five O'Clock Heros, The Rakes.

On the live side we've already been to see James Blunt and Art Brut this year (more of which later this week) and we'll ve going to see The Killers, Bloc Party, The Dears, Babyshambles, Interpol, Doves, The Zutons and The Tears. I'm sure I'm forgetting someone.

It's going to be a great year.
