Babyshambles a three piece
Just back from our first gig of 2006.
I know it's not a newsworthy event to have a now-show at a Babyshambles gig, but in case you weren't there, Patrick (guitarist) was a no show. I've no idea whether it was planned or whether he just couldn't be arsed. Pete mumbled something about rehab or relationship counseling, so it could be anything. Thankfully Pete was sober enough to play guitar.
As for the gig, it was a pretty mixed bag, with something for everyone: Libertines songs, Babyshambles songs, old demos, new songs, the General doing the pentanville rap, Pete reading out his court papers, Pete reading poetry and a crowd that hang on his every word.
The thing with Pete is that every so often there is a spark of genius. There are times on stage when I don't really think he knows what he's going to play next. You can see Drew the bass player watching him to try and figure out where the next little Jam will lead.
And the Libertines songs are good and everyone goes mental, but, and I'm going to sound like a snob, Babyshambles just aren't as good as the libs and there's nothing like a Libertines song to show it.
So there you go - I don't think I could ask for anything more. I even picked up a 7" copy of the Albion single that someone jetisoned just as the band came on stage.
